The next morning, Nick and I worked away, together, side-by-side.

And was it my imagination, or did he stand closer to me than ever before? Our hands touched numerous times, and every time his fingers touched mine, a swell of love rose in my heart.

When the crowd left, and we’d taken care of all our customers, Nick turned to face me, his left hand slung negligently on the counter, his right hand resting lightly on his slender hip.

I so wanted to kiss him.

“Remind me again, what are you planning to do . . . about your cat?” he asked.

“Oh, well, my sister’s bringing her two daughters over to the house tonight, and we’re going to have a little burial and service for Leia.”

“Oh, so you’re not taking her to the vet to be cremated?”

“You know, it didn’t even occur to me to do that.”

“You’ve got a big yard?” he asked. “No nosy neighbors throwing fits at the sight of someone grave-digging?”

I thought of the twenty-five acres of gently rolling hills behind the house, leading into the deep woods. “Not a problem.”

“You still . . . want me to come over too?”

“Oh, of course, I do.”

“You better give me directions to your house,” he said.
